Himachal Forests, orchards and old roads

From the tea gardens of Kangra to the wooden villages of Kinnaur — the gentler, greener face of the Himalaya, and the gateway to its high valleys.

About Himachal

Where the high Himalaya begins

Himachal Pradesh climbs from the foothills to the Great Himalaya in a remarkably short distance. Its lower valleys are full of deodar forest, apple orchards and temples built of timber and stone, while its northern districts — Lahaul, Spiti and upper Kinnaur — are high desert.

We use Himachal both as a destination in its own right and as the gentle approach to Spiti and Ladakh. Kangra's tea gardens and Tibetan monasteries, Sangla and Chitkul in Kinnaur, and the Tirthan valley are all wonderful places to slow down.

Most of the state is accessible year-round, though the monsoon in July and August brings heavy rain and landslides to the lower hills.

Questions

Planning a trip to Himachal

Is Himachal good during the monsoon?

The lower valleys get heavy rain in July and August. That's exactly when Spiti and Lahaul, in the rain shadow, are at their best.

Is it suitable for families?

Very. Kangra, Kinnaur and the Tirthan valley offer comfortable stays, short drives and easy walks.

Do I need permits?

Not for most of the state. Foreign nationals need an inner-line permit for the border stretch of Kinnaur, which we arrange.

Can I combine Himachal with Spiti?

Yes — Kinnaur is the natural approach to Spiti, and Kangra makes a gentle start or finish.
